Real Madrid have informed Leeds United and Sunderland that forward Gonzalo García is not available for transfer, despite growing interest from both English clubs. The decision comes as head coach Xabi Alonso has made it clear he wants the young striker to remain part of the first-team squad.
According to TEAMtalk, both Leeds and Sunderland made inquiries toward the end of December to assess Gonzalo García’s availability. However, Real Madrid responded firmly, stating that the player will not be sold during the current transfer window.
Leeds and Sunderland Show Strong Interest in Gonzalo García
Interest in Gonzalo García has been building for months. In November, TEAMtalk journalist Fraser Fletcher reported that Leeds United were preparing a bid worth at least £17 million for the striker, underlining the club’s belief in his long-term potential.
Despite the financial appeal, Real Madrid’s stance has remained unchanged, prioritising squad depth and player development over a potential sale.
Xabi Alonso Blocks Exit to Strengthen Attack
The decision to keep Gonzalo García was made directly by Xabi Alonso, who has communicated to club executives that he wants the striker available for the remainder of the season. With Endrick already having departed and concerns over attacking depth, Alonso is unwilling to reduce his options in the final third.
Reports also suggest that Gonzalo has been assured of increased playing time in the second half of the season, particularly with Kylian Mbappé currently sidelined through injury.
Hat-Trick Performance Boosts Gonzalo’s Standing
Gonzalo García’s importance was further highlighted last Sunday (4), when Real Madrid defeated Real Betis 5–1. The young forward scored a hat trick, delivering a standout performance that drew widespread praise.
Xabi Alonso was quick to commend the striker’s attitude and professionalism, even referencing his impact beyond minutes played.
“It was a dream for him to score a hat trick. I’m very happy for him because of how he works every day. He has an incredible attitude and is a fantastic example of what it means to be a player developed here,” Alonso said.
Gonzalo García’s Season So Far
So far this season, Gonzalo García has made 18 appearances for Real Madrid, starting four matches. The three goals against Real Betis marked his first goals of the campaign, adding to one assist.
With Real Madrid committed to keeping him and Xabi Alonso backing his development, Gonzalo García now appears set for a bigger role at the Santiago Bernabéu in the months ahead.
