Liverpool name Grace Fisk as new captain after Niamh Fahey’s retirement

Liverpool have announced defender Grace Fisk as the club’s new captain, following the retirement of long-serving skipper Niamh Fahey. The 27-year-old takes on the armband at a crucial time, as the Reds look to recover from a difficult start to the Women’s Super League (WSL) season.

Fresh leadership in challenging times

The appointment comes after Liverpool suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby in the opening round of the WSL. The result left the team at the bottom of the table, intensifying the pressure on new manager Gareth Taylor to deliver quick improvements.

Fisk on her new role

In her first statement as captain, Fisk admitted she was surprised but honored to take over the role:

“It’s a huge honor for me to be named club captain here at Liverpool. It was an incredible feeling when I was asked to wear the armband. Obviously, I haven’t known Gaz for that long, so the fact that he chose me means a lot. It’s nothing I ever expected or even considered.”

The defender also paid tribute to Fahey’s legacy, while vowing to lead in her own way:

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to replace Niamh Fahey, but I’ll try to lead the team in my own way, be there for everyone, and show our fans how much this means to me.”

What’s next for Liverpool

Liverpool are targeting a stronger WSL campaign after a disappointing 2024/25 season, marked by inconsistent results. With Fisk now wearing the armband, the Reds aim to rebuild team spirit and regain competitiveness in the league.

Their next test comes on Sunday (14), against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. Kick-off is set for 8:00 am (Brasília time).
