Deschamps hails Mbappé after France star surpasses Henry in win over Iceland

Kylian Mbappé was once again decisive for France, guiding Les Bleus to a 2-1 victory over Iceland in Tuesday’s (9) World Cup qualifier. The Real Madrid striker scored from the penalty spot and provided an assist, cementing his role as the team’s leader while also surpassing Thierry Henry in the all-time scoring charts.

Mbappé shines in Reykjavík

Mbappé opened the scoring early in the first half and later assisted Barcola for the decisive goal, ensuring France’s win. According to SofaScore, the 25-year-old completed the full 90 minutes plus stoppage time, registering 54 touches, three shots, and earning a match-high rating of 8.3.

Deschamps full of praise

Head coach Didier Deschamps had nothing but compliments for his number 10 after the final whistle:

“He’s good with his head. He has legs, he works hard, and he comes up with a lot of solutions. He’s effective because he scored in both games (Ukraine and Iceland). He’s a leader, selfless, free, and has a good connection with Michael (Olise).”

Record books rewritten

With two goals during this FIFA break, Mbappé surpassed Thierry Henry’s 51-goal tally for France. Now sitting at 52, the Real Madrid star is closing in on Olivier Giroud, who leads the national team’s scoring record with 57.

At just 25 years old, Mbappé is expected not only to equal Giroud’s record but potentially set an unreachable mark for future generations.

What’s next for France

France now turns its attention to the next round of World Cup qualifiers. Les Bleus face Azerbaijan on October 10, at 3:45 pm (Brasília time) in League A Group 2 action.
