Italy Reach Women’s Euro Semifinals After 28 Years, But Still Seen as Underdogs

Cristiana Girelli’s late heroics send Italy to the final four despite low expectations

Italy are through to the semifinals of the Women’s Euro 2025, marking their first appearance in the last four since 1997. The Azzurre stunned Norway 2-1 in the quarterfinals, with Cristiana Girelli scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner in one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament so far.

Italy Defy the Odds on Historic Run

Heading into the competition, Italy were widely seen as underdogs, with few expecting a deep run due to their lack of global stars and a disappointing track record in recent editions.

Their quarterfinal win against Group A winners Norway highlighted a shift in momentum. Girelli opened the scoring before Ada Hegerberg equalized. But the Italian veteran struck again in the 95th minute, securing a hard-fought win and sparking scenes of celebration.

First Semifinal Appearance Since 1997

The result sees Italy reach the Women’s Euro semifinals for the first time in 28 years. Their last deep run came in 1997, when they reached the final before falling to Germany 2-0. Since then, Italy have struggled to progress beyond the quarterfinals, suffering early exits in 2009, 2013, and most recently in 2022, when they finished last in their group with just one point.

That 2022 campaign was marked by a 5-1 defeat to France, symbolizing a team in need of renewal. Now, in 2025, the Azzurre have turned things around.

Group Stage: Narrow Escape from Early Exit

Italy were drawn in Group B alongside Spain, Belgium, and Portugal. They opened their campaign with a solid 1-0 win over Belgium, courtesy of a goal from Arianna Caruso. A frustrating 1-1 draw against Portugal in the second round left them needing a result in the final game.

Although Italy lost 3-1 to Spain, results elsewhere worked in their favor Belgium’s win over Portugal meant Italy squeezed through to the knockout stage in second place.

England Await in the Semifinals

Italy will now face tournament favorites England in the semifinals, scheduled for Tuesday (22nd), at 4 PM (Brasília time). Despite their inspiring journey, the Italians enter the clash as clear underdogs, given England’s recent dominance and Italy’s comparatively average squad.

Still, with momentum, belief, and a veteran goal scorer in Girelli, Italy have proven they can’t be counted out. Another upset could be on the cards.
