Manchester City extends Yui Hasegawa’s contract until 2029 in landmark deal for women’s football

Manchester City have announced the renewal of midfielder Yui Hasegawa’s contract until the end of 2029, in what is being described as one of the biggest deals in the history of women’s football.

Hasegawa commits long-term to City

The 28-year-old Japanese star, regarded among the best midfielders in the world, has become a cornerstone for both Manchester City and the Japan national team. Last season, she made 22 appearances in the Women’s Super League (WSL), impressing with her defensive contributions and registering three assists.

The new five-year extension reflects City’s determination to keep their top talent as they seek to return to the summit of English football.

City rebuild after disappointing season

Manchester City head into the 2025/26 WSL season with high expectations. Despite assembling a strong squad last year, the team underperformed, finishing outside Champions League qualification spots and bowing out to Chelsea in the quarterfinals.

This year, City reinforced their roster while keeping key names like Kerolin, the Brazilian forward who has been decisive with goals and assists, and now Hasegawa, whose leadership in midfield will be vital in the club’s title push.

What’s next for Manchester City

City’s journey begins immediately with a heavyweight clash. They open the Women’s Super League season on Friday (5), at 3:30 pm (Brasília time), against reigning champions Chelsea, in a match that promises to set the tone for the season.
