Jana Fernández leaves Barcelona to join the London City Lionesses in the WSL

Spanish defender Jana Fernández has left Barcelona to sign with London City Lionesses, the newly promoted club making waves in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with a bold recruitment strategy.
From Barcelona to London
At just 23 years old, Fernández departs her boyhood club after coming through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and establishing herself as a regular starter last season. Her move signals London City’s determination to compete at the top level, with the defender expected to be a leader in the squad despite her young age.
Jana Fernández on Her New Challenge
Speaking about her transfer, Fernández highlighted both the ambition of the London project and her own excitement to experience English football.
“It’s an ambitious project; I’m really looking forward to the start of the season. London City has made some very good signings. I’m excited to meet the coach, understand our style of play, and begin this new chapter in the WSL,” said the Spanish defender.
She also praised the club’s atmosphere and vision, adding:
“We have a really good team, a great atmosphere, and the girls are very friendly. This club is ambitious, just like I am, and I believe we can achieve big things.”
Lionesses’ Ambitious Project
The London City Lionesses, notable for their all-female ownership and management structure, are aiming to challenge traditional WSL powerhouses with targeted signings. Fernández joins as one of their headline recruits, bringing Champions League and Liga F experience to the side.
Possible Debut
Fernández could make her official debut in Round 1 of the Women’s Super League, when London City face Arsenal away from home. The match is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, at 9:30 a.m. (Brasília time).
