Donnarumma’s footwork raises questions for Guardiola at Manchester City

Donnarumma and the game with his feet: a problem for Guardiola to solve at Manchester City

Manchester City’s new goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, is already under scrutiny. Signed from PSG to replace Ederson, the Italian arrives with a reputation for shot-stopping but faces doubts about his ability to adapt to Pep Guardiola’s build-from-the-back philosophy.

From Ederson to Donnarumma: A Tactical Challenge

City’s system has long relied on Ederson’s precision passing to launch attacks and control possession from the back. The Brazilian averaged 30–50 passes per game in the Premier League and even delivered six assists during his time at the Etihad. In contrast, Donnarumma averaged just 25–30 passes per match in Ligue 1 last season, rarely involved in PSG’s build-up play.

For Guardiola, this shift represents a tactical challenge: how to integrate a goalkeeper less comfortable with the ball at his feet into a system designed around it.

Concerning Stats From Paris

Despite winning five trophies with PSG last season, Donnarumma endured his worst save percentage of his career, conceding 43 goals in 47 matches. He was even relegated to the bench at the start of the campaign by Luis Enrique before regaining his spot. PSG’s decision to move him on, following the signing of Lucas Chevalier, highlighted the lack of confidence in his long-term role.

Competition Already in Place

At City, Donnarumma won’t have an easy path. The club also signed James Trafford, considered a natural successor to Ederson thanks to his excellent distribution skills. Trafford’s presence means Guardiola has a ready alternative should Donnarumma struggle with the Premier League’s demands.

Fans Divided

Reactions among Manchester City supporters have been mixed. While many are excited about signing a goalkeeper widely regarded as one of the world’s best shot-stoppers, others worry about how his footwork weaknesses could disrupt Guardiola’s possession-based system. One fan summed it up online: “The best goalkeeper in the world has arrived. Rivals be afraid.”
