Ilkay Gündogan leaves Manchester City and signs with Galatasaray until 2027

Ilkay Gündogan’s time at Manchester City has come to an end. The German midfielder, 34, has completed a move to Galatasaray, signing a contract that runs until June 2027, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

City Approve Free Transfer

Despite having one year left on his contract with City, the Premier League champions agreed to release Gündogan on a free transfer, prioritizing salary savings over a transfer fee. The deal is expected to be officially signed on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Significant Pay Cut in Turkey

Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reported that Gündogan will earn €5 million per season at Galatasaray, a sharp reduction from the £11 million per year he received at Manchester City. While he earned around R$81 million annually in England, his new deal is valued at roughly R$31 million per season.

Last Season With Manchester City

In his final campaign at the Etihad, Gündogan played 54 matches, starting 38 times, scoring five goals and providing six assists. His consistency in midfield remained a valuable asset, but with City restructuring, both parties opted to part ways.

New Rivalry in Turkey

At Galatasaray, Gündogan will soon line up against a familiar face. His former City teammate, Ederson, recently joined Fenerbahçe, setting up a direct rivalry in the Turkish Super Lig. Meanwhile, Gianluigi Donnarumma has joined Manchester City as part of the club’s wider squad overhaul.
