Liverpool lose Marc Guehi due to lack of replacement at Crystal Palace

Liverpool’s move for Marc Guehi collapsed at the last moment, after Crystal Palace pulled the plug due to the lack of a suitable replacement. What was expected to be one of the Reds’ final big signings of the summer ended in disappointment, despite a £35 million offer being accepted in principle.

Crystal Palace Ultimatum

Initially reluctant to sell their captain, Palace agreed to let Guehi leave only if a replacement was secured. Talks were advanced for Brazilian defender Igor Júlio from Brighton, but the move collapsed after he failed his medical. Left without alternatives, manager Oliver Glasner intervened, warning the board that Guehi’s departure without reinforcements would severely weaken the squad. According to English reports, Glasner even threatened to step down if the deal went through. The club sided with its manager, and Liverpool were informed that negotiations were off.

Liverpool’s Billion-Euro Window

The collapse of the Guehi deal did not stop Liverpool from dominating the transfer market. The Reds ended the summer with nine new signings, spending a staggering €483 million, the highest total across Europe. Only two players arrived on free transfers, while marquee signings included:

  • Alexander Isak (€150m)
  • Florian Wirtz (€125m)
  • Hugo Ekitiké (€95m)

This spree pushed Liverpool’s net spend far beyond Premier League rivals, with a €155 million gap over second-placed Chelsea. Aston Villa, by contrast, spent just €30 million.

On-Field Momentum

Despite the transfer setback, Liverpool’s form has been flawless. Dominik Szoboszlai was the hero in a 1-0 win over Arsenal, scoring a stunning free-kick at Anfield Road to preserve Arne Slot’s perfect Premier League start.

What’s Next

Liverpool return to action after the FIFA break on September 14, when they visit Burnley in league play. Just three days later, they make their Champions League debut at Anfield against Atlético Madrid, kicking off a crucial stretch in their season.
