Messi likely to renew contract with Inter Miami until 2028, says journalist

Lionel Messi is expected to renew his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, extending his stay in Major League Soccer until he turns 41, according to journalist Xavi Campos on Catalunya Ràdio’s Tot Costa program.

Messi to Stay in MLS Until Age 41

Messi, 38, is currently under contract with Inter Miami until the end of the 2025 MLS season, but according to the latest reports from Spain, an extension for three additional seasons is being finalized behind the scenes. The new deal would see the Argentine icon remain at the Florida club through the end of the 2028 season.

Discussions around a contract renewal have been ongoing since May, when Javier Mascherano publicly confirmed the club’s desire to retain Messi. Though talks were said to be at an early stage, momentum has now built, with only formalities remaining before an announcement.

Inter Miami and Fans Keen to Keep Messi

Both Inter Miami’s board and fanbase have made no secret of their desire to keep Messi at the heart of the club’s project. Since his arrival in July 2023, the former Barcelona and PSG star has become the face of MLS, transforming the league’s visibility.

In his debut MLS season, Messi featured in 30 matches, netting 24 goals and providing 10 assists, including key performances during Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup title run.

The Argentine will also reportedly be reunited soon with Rodrigo De Paul, formerly of Atlético Madrid, further strengthening the club’s Latin American core.

Messi Voices Criticism of MLS Disciplinary Policy

Despite his success on the pitch, Messi recently criticized MLS’s decision to suspend him for one match after missing the All-Star Game on July 23. The league enforced the suspension in line with its participation policy, which also impacted Jordi Alba.

As a result, Messi missed Inter Miami’s scoreless draw against FC Cincinnati on July 26 in the first leg of the MLS East Group stage, raising concerns over the league’s handling of star player absences.
