Argentine captain set for first match in two weeks after muscle injury recovery

Inter Miami fans can breathe a sigh of relief Lionel Messi is expected back on the pitch this Saturday (16) when the club faces LA Galaxy at Chase Stadium in MLS. Head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed the news on Friday, ending speculation over the Argentine star’s recovery timeline.

Back After Minor Injury Layoff

Messi has been sidelined since August 2, when he suffered a mild muscle injury in his right leg during the Leagues Cup clash against Necaxa. The 37-year-old underwent treatment and gradually rejoined team training, returning to full sessions on August 13.

“Leo is fine. He’s been training with the team since Wednesday. If nothing unusual happens, he’ll be called up for tomorrow’s match,” Mascherano said.

Key Boost for Eastern Conference Push

The return of Inter Miami’s number 10 comes at a crucial stage. The club currently sits on 42 points, nine behind Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference standings. In 2025, Messi has already scored 24 goals and provided 10 assists in 33 appearances across club and country.

De Paul Also Expected to Feature

Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul is also set to be available for the fixture. He missed several training sessions due to visa-related travel but has been cleared to play.

Messi on Rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo

Speaking recently to the Ballon d’Or, Messi reflected on his legendary rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo:

“It was always a tough battle against Cristiano Ronaldo. I think it was good for both of us, as we’re both great competitors. It was a golden era for us and for all football fans.”

Messi’s anticipated return is set to be one of the weekend’s biggest storylines in MLS, as Inter Miami aims to keep their playoff ambitions alive.
