Bayern Munich takes João Palhinha out of the game due to advanced negotiations with Tottenham

Portuguese midfielder close to Premier League return after underwhelming season in Munich

Bayern Munich have confirmed that João Palhinha was left out of Saturday’s pre-season clash against Lyon due to advanced negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur. The move signals an imminent exit for the Portuguese midfielder, who is expected to return to the Premier League in the coming days.

Palhinha, 29, joined Bayern last summer from Fulham in a deal worth €50 million, after being a long-standing target of the German club. His initial transfer attempt in 2023 failed at the final hour due to time constraints on medical evaluations, but the move was completed ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Limited Role Under Kompany

Despite arriving with high expectations, Palhinha struggled to cement a starting role under new manager Vincent Kompany. The midfielder made 25 appearances across all competitions, totaling 986 minutes and failing to record a goal or assist. The lack of playing time reportedly prompted him to seek a move away from Bavaria.

Tottenham Move Nears Completion

Sources close to both clubs indicate that talks with Tottenham have progressed rapidly in recent weeks. Bayern’s official explanation for Palhinha’s absence against Lyon confirmed negotiations were underway, with a deal expected to be finalized within days.

Should the move go through, Palhinha would rejoin a league where he previously excelled with Fulham, making 79 Premier League appearances and earning widespread praise for his tackling and defensive consistency.

Bayern Wins in Luis Díaz’s Debut

Despite Palhinha’s absence, Bayern secured a 2–1 win over Lyon, featuring the debut of new signing Luis Díaz. Michael Olise scored both goals for the Bundesliga champions, while Alejandro Gomes netted Lyon’s lone goal.

Bundesliga Champion Set for Return to England

Palhinha will leave Bayern as part of the squad that clinched the 2024/25 Bundesliga title, though his personal impact was limited. The move to Tottenham offers a chance at revitalization, with Spurs aiming to strengthen their midfield under manager Ange Postecoglou.
