Bayern Munich draws with RB Leipzig and postpones the Bundesliga title celebration

The Bavarians were seconds away from celebrating on Saturday and Kane had even come down to the pitch when Poulsen served a bucket of cold water. Even so, Kompany’s team are already virtually champions.

Bayern Munich draws with RB Leipzig and postpones the Bundesliga title celebration

Bayern Munich were one step away from confirming their title as German champions, but Leipzig spoiled the party for the Bavarians with a goal in added time.

Vincent Kompany’s team produced a fantastic comeback in the second half, coming back from 2-0 down but conceding the equaliser ( 3-3 ) in the 94th minute, when Harry Kane, who was suspended, had already come down from the stands to the pitch to celebrate. It was not until this Saturday that the Englishman achieved the first collective title of his career, although Bayern are already virtually German champions.

The Bavarian team – whose squad even had tickets to go and celebrate in Ibiza – needed to win, but they made it easy, especially in the first half.

Benjamín Sesko put the home side ahead in the 11th minute. After winning the ball back, Leipzig launched a quick counterattack and Xavi Simons launched the Slovenian forward, who took advantage of a slip by Jonas Urbig and finished with a trivela shot from several metres out.

Before the break, Lukas Klostermann (39m) extended the hosts’ lead with a well-placed header following a free-kick taken by David Raum.

The situation was very difficult for Bayern, but everything changed in a minute. In the second half, former Sporting player Eric Dier (62m), who will leave the club at the end of the season, reduced the deficit for the Bavarians with a header at the near post, following a corner.

The equalizer came seconds later, from Michael Olise, with a cross-shot, after recovering the ball in an advanced area.

The comeback was complete in the 83rd minute, thanks to a well-placed shot from Leroy Sané.

Two minutes from the 90th minute, Kompany sent on João Palhinha to close out the middle and everything seemed on track for Bayern to secure the win, but Yussuf Poulsen gave the Bavarians a “punch in the stomach” with a classy finish at the end of the match to make it 3-3.

An “anti-climactic” moment for Bayern, who even celebrated with their fans, but in a timid way. In any case, only a catastrophe will prevent the Bavarians from winning the title, which could be confirmed on Sunday if Bayer Leverkusen slips up in Freiburg. If that doesn’t happen, Bayern can celebrate in a week’s time when they host Borussia Monchengladbach.

To avoid their rivals’ title, imagine, Leverkusen would have to wait for Bayern to lose all their games and win the ones they still have ahead, in addition to reducing a goal difference that is more than 30 in favor of the Bavarians.

German championship results and standings

In other games on Saturday, Union Berlin, without the injured Diogo Leite, drew 2-2 at home to Werder Bremen, who had André Silva on the bench. In Monchengladbach, there was a flurry of goals in the draw between Borussia and Hoffenheim (4-4), while Stuttgart won 1-0 at St. Pauli.
