Barcelona will only sell Ronald Araújo if the defender asks to leave, says report

Hansi Flick includes the Uruguayan in his plans, despite competition and recent poor form
FC Barcelona have no intention of selling Ronald Araújo this summer unless the Uruguayan centre-back formally requests to leave, according to journalist Santi Ovalle. Despite growing interest from clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, the Catalan side considers Araújo a part of their plans under new head coach Hansi Flick.
Sources close to the club confirm that no negotiations have been initiated and that Barcelona’s stance remains firm: the 25-year-old will stay unless he pushes for an exit.
Struggles and Lost Ground
Araújo endured a challenging 2024/25 season, marked by injuries and increased competition in the defensive lineup. Young talent Pau Cubarsí and veteran Iñigo Martínez formed a reliable pairing in his absence, relegating Araújo to a more limited role upon his return.
He ended the campaign with 25 appearances, scoring two goals and registering four assists, clocking 1,560 minutes, according to Transfermarkt. Despite these contributions, sources say he may start the new season on the bench.
Flick Backs Araújo Despite Uncertainty
Barcelona’s new coach Hansi Flick has communicated internally that Araújo remains an important part of his long-term plans, but is also committed to merit-based selection. That said, a sudden departure remains unlikely unless triggered by the player himself.
Christensen Could Be the One to Exit
In contrast, Andreas Christensen is more likely to leave during the current transfer window. Also hampered by injuries last season, the Danish international is viewed as a rotational option and may be sold if the club receives a reasonable offer.
Barcelona, facing ongoing financial constraints, continue to evaluate their squad depth, but remain clear on Araújo: the defender stays unless he says otherwise.
