A dominant performance by La Roja kicks off their Women’s Euro campaign in style

Spain opened their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaign in emphatic fashion on Thursday (July 3), routing Portugal 5-0 in their Group B opener and cementing their status as one of the tournament’s top contenders.

From the opening whistle, La Roja controlled possession and tempo, needing just two minutes to break the deadlock. After a slick passing sequence, Olga Carmona set up Esther González, who slotted home the opener with ease.

Just five minutes later, a clever combination involving Mariona Caldentey allowed Vicky López to find space in front of goal and double the lead for Spain, 2-0.

Despite a brief period of defensive resilience from Portugal, Spain continued their onslaught. In the 41st minute, Caldentey provided another assist—this time to Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who calmly finished to make it 3-0. Two minutes later, Esther González struck again, netting her second of the night to send Spain into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead.

The second half saw Spain ease their tempo, content to maintain possession and protect their advantage. The biggest storyline after the break was the emotional return of Aitana Bonmatí, who made her comeback after recovering from meningitis. Though the pace slowed, Spain still found one more goal in stoppage time, as Salma Paralluelo delivered a pinpoint cross for Cristina Martín-Prieto to seal the 5-0 scoreline.
