Iñaki Peña Set to Leave Barcelona Within the Next Week

Goalkeeper seeks move abroad after falling out of favor at the club

Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Peña is expected to leave the club within the coming days, according to a report from MARCA. The 25-year-old, who came through the club’s youth system, is no longer part of the first-team plans and is actively working to secure a transfer away from La Liga before the start of the new season.

Peña has fallen to fourth in the goalkeeper hierarchy at the Catalan club. With the arrival of Joan García, the expected contract renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, and the continued presence of Marc-André ter Stegen, Peña has seen his chances of playing significantly diminish.

While he has yet to receive concrete offers from other Spanish clubs, Peña has reportedly attracted interest from several European teams. His priority is to finalize a move in time to join a new club for preseason training. Options under consideration include a permanent transfer or a mutual contract termination that would allow him to leave as a free agent.

Barcelona are also eager to resolve Peña’s situation as soon as possible, in part due to financial considerations. The club is currently managing tight salary cap restrictions and views Peña’s departure as a necessary step in rebalancing its squad and wage structure.

Once the goalkeeper’s exit is confirmed, Barcelona is expected to turn its attention to negotiating a possible transfer for Ter Stegen. The goal is to streamline the rotation between Joan García and Szczesny heading into the 2024/25 season.

Peña’s departure would mark the end of his time at the club where he developed as a youth player, and a new chapter in his career could be just days away.
