Italy earns their first European Championship win since 2017 with a narrow 1-0 victory

Italy kicked off their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaign with a vital 1-0 win over Belgium on Thursday, thanks to a decisive first-half strike from midfielder Arianna Caruso. The result marks Italy’s first victory in the tournament since 2017 and their first opening-match win since 2009.

The only goal of the game came in the 42nd minute, when full-back Lucia Di Guglielmo delivered a quick, precise pass from the right flank to Caruso, who found space just outside the penalty area. The Bayern Munich midfielder took one touch before curling a right-footed shot past Belgian goalkeeper Lisa Lichtfus at the near post.

A Dominant Display from Caruso

Caruso, named Player of the Match, was a constant threat throughout the opening period, probing Belgium’s defense with several attempts in the first 20 minutes. Italy’s pressure paid off just before halftime, giving coach Andrea Soncin’s squad a crucial early advantage in Group B.

“It was what we wanted,” Soncin said post-match to RAI. “The first match is always complicated. We can definitely improve and we must if we want to continue to grow, but I am happy with the attitude we showed.”

Belgium Waste Chances Despite Possession

Belgium saw more of the ball in the first half and registered 10 shots compared to Italy’s eight. However, they failed to capitalize on their opportunities. Mariam Toloba missed a clear chance in the 26th minute, and captain Tessa Wullaert was unable to convert from close range just before Caruso’s goal.

Lichtfus kept Belgium in the game with a sharp save on Cristiana Girelli’s inventive backheel in the 64th minute, but the 2022 quarter-finalists couldn’t break through Italy’s defense to find an equalizer.

Italy’s win places them second in Group B, behind Spain on goal difference after La Roja’s 5-0 demolition of Portugal earlier in the day. Italy will face Portugal in their second match on Monday, July 7, while Belgium will look to bounce back against group leaders Spain.
