Spain Coach Montse Tomé: “We’ll Try to Maintain Our Essence” Ahead of Euro Semifinal Against Germany

Spain head coach Montse Tomé emphasized the importance of maintaining Spain’s signature possession-based style as they prepare to face Germany in the UEFA Women’s Euro semifinal on Wednesday, July 23.
The highly anticipated clash pits tournament favorites Spain who boast the best attacking record with 16 goals scored against a resurgent German side that eliminated France in a dramatic penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.
“We’ll try to maintain our essence, which is to control the ball,” Tomé said at the pre-match press conference. “Germany defends differently than other teams. We’ve studied where they create space, and that’s where we want to work. In the end, it’s about dictating the match by keeping the ball.”
Spain enter the semifinal in peak form after dominant victories over Portugal and Belgium in the group stage, followed by a confident 2-0 win over Switzerland in the quarterfinals. Germany, meanwhile, started strong with two straight group-stage wins but fell to second place after a loss in the final round. Their resilience, however, was on full display as they edged past France to book their spot in the semis.
Tomé also praised the unity and mentality of her squad, stressing that every player has contributed to Spain’s success regardless of time on the pitch.
“One of our biggest strengths is the team we’ve built. We’ve always had talent, but now we have a group that believes in our path,” Tomé added. “Even the players who haven’t played are contributing. That’s what makes this team capable of achieving great things.”
The match will be played at 4:00 PM (Brasília time) / 9:00 PM (CEST) at Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich and will be broadcast live via CazéTV on YouTube, Disney+, and Samsung TV Plus.
With a place in the final on the line, Spain will aim to make history by defeating Germany for the first time in a major tournament and Montse Tomé believes her team is ready.
