Women’s euros 2025: Switzerland’s Riola Xhemaili Could Start on the Bench Against Spain; Here’s Why

Switzerland’s Riola Xhemaili, the hero of her country’s dramatic qualification to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarterfinals, may surprisingly start on the bench against Spain despite her recent standout performance.
Switzerland’s Heroic Qualification
Switzerland advanced from the group stage in thrilling fashion. After a tough opening defeat to Norway, the Swiss bounced back and faced Finland in a must-win match. Down 1-0 in the 79th minute, it was Xhemaili who netted the crucial equalizer in stoppage time (90+2), a goal that secured qualification on goal difference.
Why Xhemaili Might Not Start
Despite her heroics, Xhemaili is not guaranteed a place in the starting XI against Spain. According to team sources, the decision is tactical, with coach Inka Grings considering different formations. Xhemaili is competing with Alayah Pilgrim and Svenja Folmli for a spot in the attacking trio.
The striker, however, remains focused on the team’s goals over individual ambition:
“I don’t care if I’m a starter or a substitute. I always give everything for my country whether it’s five, ten, or ninety minutes,” said Xhemaili.
“If I’m not playing, I try to help Svenja or Alayah. We all have the same goal.”
Team Unity Over Individual Roles
The sense of camaraderie is strong within the Swiss squad. Folmli, who is also competing for a starting role, echoed the same spirit:
“It doesn’t matter if you start or come on later the important thing is that we succeed as a group. That’s why I was so happy for Xhemaili when she scored. A goal like that in the 90th minute? What could be better?”
Quarterfinal Showdown
Switzerland now turns its attention to a decisive quarterfinal clash against tournament-favorites Spain, set for Friday, July 18 at 6:00 PM (Brasília time). The match will take place at the Stade de Suisse and is expected to be played in front of a full crowd, as the Women’s Euro continues to break attendance records.
