After losing Nico Williams, Barcelona shifted focus to Atalanta star

With Nico Williams officially renewing with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona have turned their attention to Ademola Lookman, Atalanta’s standout forward, as a new option to strengthen the attack ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Hansi Flick Approves Lookman as a Tactical Fit

The 26-year-old Nigerian international has emerged as a priority target for Barça head coach Hansi Flick, who reportedly admires Lookman’s pace, versatility, and ability to operate across the front line. The winger can play on both flanks and as a second striker, a tactical profile similar to that of Liverpool’s Luis Díaz another name on Barça’s long-term wishlist.

Lookman Seen as a More Affordable Option

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Lookman is also considered a more financially feasible acquisition. With a contract valid until 2027 but no signs of renewal, Atalanta would be open to negotiating for a fee below €50 million (around R$318 million). This makes Lookman an attractive alternative in a market where top-tier wingers often command inflated prices.

The Nigerian is reportedly eager to take the next step in his career by joining a Champions League powerhouse. His performances in Serie A and the Europa League including a starring role in Atalanta’s historic 2024 Europa League title have only intensified the interest around him.

Tottenham Also in the Race

Barcelona are not alone in the race. Tottenham Hotspur have shown strong interest in bringing Lookman back to the Premier League, where he previously played for Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City. The London club views him as a natural fit for Ange Postecoglou’s high-energy style.

Agent Tensions Could Complicate the Deal

One potential hurdle in negotiations is Lookman’s representation agency, which also manages Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. Tensions between the Catalan club and the agency reportedly stemming from contract renewal talks with the German keeper could create friction and complicate any transfer discussions.

Barça Prioritizing Sales Before Reinforcements

Despite the strong interest, Barcelona have not made an official bid for Lookman. The club’s focus remains on reducing the wage bill and offloading fringe players to create room for new signings. Major transfer activity is expected to accelerate in August, once Barça finalize key departures and clarify their Financial Fair Play standing.
