Fluminense beats Inter Milan and advances to the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup

The goals of the match were scored by Germán Cano, 3 minutes into the first half, and Hércules, 48 minutes into the second half.
The current European champions and runners-up were unable to overcome Brazilian teams in the Club World Cup. On Monday, it was Fluminense’s turn to dispatch the faded Internazionale with a 2-0 victory, with goals from Cano and Hércules, at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
Renato Gaúcho was essential for Fluminense’s victory. The coach made providential changes to the team, adopting a winning strategy, without worrying about proving immutable theories or game models. The coach adapted the team to an opponent that is the current European runner-up. Inter, in fact, showed anemic and disappointing football. Poorly organized in defense and lacking coordination in attack, it only made life difficult for Fluminense in the final laps of the lead.
Fluminense now awaits Manchester City or Al-Hilal in the quarterfinals. The match will take place next Friday at 4pm (Brasília time) at Camping World in Orlando, Florida. The tricolor team could cross paths with Palmeiras in the semifinals if both teams advance.

Renato set up Fluminense with three defenders, but this tactical formation was not synonymous with defensive play. The game did not even need to gain pace for the score to be opened. Fluminense showed from the opening moves that they were ready to surprise. The team from Laranjeiras set up a play on the right side after Martinelli recovered the ball. Arias crossed, the ball deflected off the marker and fell to Cano, who, in his 200th game with the tricolor jersey, dove with his head to put the ball in the back of Sommer’s net in the 3rd minute.
Of the four games played in this World Cup, Internazionale started behind on the scoreboard in three. In the retrospect, there was a draw with Mexico’s Monterrey and a comeback against Urawa Reds from Japan. The Milan team was anxious and could not find many spaces to finish, leaving Fluminense more comfortable.
At 39 minutes, Fluminense showed up again in the game. The key to harassing Inter was the left side of the Italian team’s defense. In a play designed by this sector, Ignácio scored the second goal. The play, however, was disallowed for offside. In the final minutes of the first half, the spotlight was on coach Renato Gaúcho, who delayed Inter Milan’s throw-in, causing Mkhitaryan to revolt. The Armenian confronted the Tricolor coach and a brief scuffle ensued. The referee punished Renato with a yellow card.
Internazionale returned for the second half with the same defects: a congested defense and midfield and an unpopulated attack. Fluminense, on the other hand, showed a desire to fight for every ball for a positive result.
The Milan club remained ineffective in the game, just as they have been throughout the Club World Cup. A team lacking creativity and desire to be on the field. Fábio was only sweating because of the intense heat of 32ºC, because, if it were up to the Nerazzurri players, the Fluminense goalkeeper would not have to work.
Dominant, Fluminense almost scored the second goal with Arias, with a beautiful shot from a long distance. One of Inter’s few chances was wasted in impressive fashion by De Vrij in the 24th minute in the penalty area. After this move, the Milan team began to explore the attacking field more and put pressure on Fluminense. Fábio then began to make a difference. The post and the poor aim of the Inter players also did. There was tension in the extra time, but there was still time for the team from Laranjeiras to increase the lead. Hércules received a pass, entered the area and fired a cross shot to put Fluminense in the quarterfinals.
