PSG player could join Chelsea after the clubs’ World Cup clash

Italian goalkeeper could be on the move amid contract uncertainty
Following a high-stakes showdown in the FIFA Club World Cup final, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is now reportedly being targeted by Chelsea, according to a report by L’Équipe.
Despite being PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2021, Donnarumma’s future in Paris is in doubt, with contract renewal talks stalling and speculation heating up after the final loss to Chelsea at MetLife Stadium.
Contract Uncertainty at PSG
Donnarumma, 26, has a deal with PSG until June 2026, but negotiations for an extension have not progressed. The club’s board is expected to present a formal renewal proposal after the Club World Cup, where PSG finished as runners-up following a 3–0 defeat to Chelsea.
The French champions, keen to build their future around core players like Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, see Donnarumma as a cornerstone of their project if he agrees to stay.
Chelsea Eyes a New No. 1
Chelsea has emerged as the leading candidate to sign the Euro 2021 winner. The London club views Donnarumma as a long-term solution in goal, amid dissatisfaction with current starter Robert Sánchez.
According to L’Équipe, Chelsea is prioritizing a high-level goalkeeper as part of its squad rebuild, particularly after offloading Đorđe Petrović to Bournemouth earlier this window.
Chelsea’s Active Transfer Window
The Blues have been busy this summer, having already signed forwards João Pedro, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and Liam Delap. At the same time, winger Noni Madueke is reportedly finalizing a move to Arsenal, freeing up space for potential further arrivals.
Donnarumma’s Impact and Stats
Since joining PSG from AC Milan, Donnarumma has made 160 appearances, including 46 this season. In the 2025 Club World Cup, he conceded just one goal across five matches before shipping three in the final against Chelsea.
The Italian was previously crowned The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper in 2021 and played a starring role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph (held in 2021). He was also instrumental in PSG’s first-ever Champions League title, claimed just months ago.
A Farewell Looming?
With talks pending and Chelsea preparing a potential offer, Sunday’s final may mark Donnarumma’s last match in a PSG shirt. Should a move materialize, it could be one of the most high-profile transfers of the summer.
Stay tuned as developments unfold in the coming days and as Chelsea continues its search for elite reinforcements to return to title contention.
