PSG’s Luis Enrique could face severe punishment for possible assault on João Pedro, says expert

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique may face a significant suspension following a post-match incident involving Chelsea forward João Pedro in the aftermath of the FIFA Club World Cup final, which ended in a 3-0 victory for Chelsea.
According to Eduardo Iturralde, a former FIFA referee and analyst for Carrusel Deportivo, Enrique could be sanctioned by FIFA for what is being described as a possible physical aggression, after he allegedly slapped João Pedro during a post-match scuffle at MetLife Stadium.
“Luis Enrique could be suspended for a long time. He may even be banned from coaching for a while. You can’t touch an opponent’s face,” said Iturralde, noting that FIFA can impose penalties independent of yellow or red cards, which expire at the end of the season.
Luis Enrique Denies Intentional Aggression
Luis Enrique addressed the incident in a post-match interview, claiming he did not intend to harm any player and entered the fray only to separate athletes during the heated exchange.
“It was an emotional game. Tensions were high, and I simply wanted to avoid a brawl,” he said. “I regret how things unfolded.”
Despite Enrique’s denial, the video evidence reportedly shows physical contact, and FIFA is expected to review the footage and referee’s report before determining any disciplinary action.
Post-Match Chaos After Chelsea’s Win
The final whistle sparked chaotic scenes between players and staff from both sides. Chelsea had just secured a historic Club World Cup title, while PSG, considered favorites by many, were visibly frustrated by the loss. João Pedro, who scored one of Chelsea’s goals, appeared to be at the center of the confrontation.
PSG President Not Concerned
In the aftermath, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi expressed no frustration with the defeat, praising the team’s journey to the final.
“Reaching five finals and winning four is something to be proud of,” said Al-Khelaïfi. “Losing this one doesn’t change our belief in this project.”
What Happens Next?
FIFA has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. However, if the disciplinary panel confirms the assault, Luis Enrique could face a multi-match suspension from FIFA competitions potentially sidelining him for the start of the next Champions League or international Club World Cup cycle.
More details are expected following FIFA’s disciplinary review.
