Tottenham have strengthened their squad for the 2025–26 campaign with the signing of Japanese forward Maika Hamano. The 21-year-old joins Spurs on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season, marking a notable move between the two London rivals.

Tottenham, who continue to enjoy a strong campaign in the Women’s Super League, confirmed the arrival of Hamano on Sunday (4), adding creativity and attacking depth ahead of a demanding schedule.

Maika Hamano’s career path and rise in women’s football

Hamano began her professional career in Japan, representing clubs such as Cerezo Osaka and Kobe Leonessa. Her technical quality, tactical intelligence and maturity on the ball quickly set her apart, earning her a move to Chelsea in 2023.

At Stamford Bridge, the Japanese striker featured in important matches and gained valuable experience at the highest level. However, fierce competition within the squad limited her opportunities as a regular starter, prompting the decision to seek more consistent playing time elsewhere.

Hamano speaks after completing Tottenham move

Speaking during her presentation, Maika Hamano expressed her excitement about joining Tottenham and outlined her ambitions for the season.

The forward highlighted her desire to contribute with goals, assists and strong performances, while stressing the importance of adapting quickly to her new teammates and playing style in order to help the team compete at the highest level.

The loan agreement between Chelsea and Tottenham does not include an option to buy, meaning Hamano is expected to return to Chelsea at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season.

International ambitions remain a key focus

Beyond club football, Maika Hamano remains a regular member of the Japanese national team. She has already featured in major international tournaments and is expected to use this loan spell as an opportunity to secure her place ahead of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

For Tottenham, the arrival of Hamano represents both a short-term boost and a statement of intent, as the club continues to build a competitive squad capable of challenging at the top of the Women’s Super League.
