Arsenal return to action this Sunday (11) as they face Portsmouth away from home in the third round of the FA Cup. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (UK time). Leading the Premier League comfortably, the Gunners arrive as clear favorites in the knockout tie.
Arteta sets clear goal for the FA Cup
Ahead of the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made it clear that winning the FA Cup is one of the club’s main objectives this season.
“That’s what we’re aiming for. That’s the purpose of this team. In the end, we will be judged by what we do. Last week doesn’t matter. We will be judged by what we are capable of doing at the end of the season,” Arteta said.
Team news: Havertz could return
Arsenal may receive a boost with the possible return of Kai Havertz, who has been recovering from a knee injury. According to Arteta, the German forward has progressed well in training and could be included in the squad if no setbacks occur.
“If everything goes well, I think he’ll be back in the squad. He’s training well, he’s increased his workload, he’s handling it well, and he’ll be ready when we can count on him,” the coach explained.
However, the Gunners will still have absences. Max Dowman is ruled out with a thigh injury, while Mosquera and Calafiori continue their recovery. Hincapié remains doubtful.
Portsmouth prepared after full week of training
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho emphasized that his team benefited from a full week of preparation leading into the clash with Arsenal.
“We don’t need to worry about the tight schedule. Facing Arsenal at home represents a great chance for us to enjoy the day, play a decent game and enjoy the FA Cup,” he said.
Mousinho also acknowledged the challenge of facing one of Europe’s elite teams but remained optimistic.
“There are many good teams in the Championship, but we are going to face one of the best teams in the world. It’s exciting, a little intimidating too, but we have to prepare as we always do,” he concluded.
