Former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof signs for Aston Villa

Aston Villa have announced the signing of former Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof, who joins on a free transfer after leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season.

One-year deal with option to extend

The 31-year-old Sweden international has signed a contract valid for one season, with the option of a longer extension depending on his performances. Lindelof had been in talks with Everton, but Villa moved quickly to secure his arrival.

He will now compete for a place in Unai Emery’s squad alongside Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings, and Bogarde, with Konsa and Mings currently the preferred central pairing.

Lindelof’s career

Lindelof began his career at Västerås SK before making his name at Benfica, where he won seven trophies, including three Portuguese league titles. In 2017, he moved to Manchester United, where he made 284 appearances, lifting the FA Cup and the League Cup.

At international level, he has represented Sweden 71 times, featuring in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Aston Villa’s difficult start

The move comes as Aston Villa search for solutions after a poor start to the 2025/26 Premier League season. Emery’s side sit second-to-last and remain winless after three matches.

Meanwhile, Manchester United, Lindelof’s former club, have also struggled, collecting just four points so far despite finally recording their first league win last weekend.
