André Onana demands new contract at Manchester United, frustrating manager Ruben Amorim

André Onana has created tension at Manchester United after requesting a contract renewal despite a 25% wage cut for missing out on the Champions League. The goalkeeper’s move has not gone down well with manager Ruben Amorim, who is already considering alternatives.

Onana requests new deal after salary cut

Upon reporting back for preseason, the 28-year-old goalkeeper asked the club for a new contract. According to journalist Laurie Whitwell, Onana was unhappy with the automatic salary reduction applied to the squad following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

His timing, however, irritated Amorim and the coaching staff. Onana had already come under pressure last season after a series of underwhelming performances, and his demand for improved terms has only fueled doubts about his long-term role at Old Trafford.

Monaco explored transfer but talks collapsed

Onana’s situation had drawn interest from abroad, with Monaco the most concrete contender this summer. The Ligue 1 side, who recently signed Ansu Fati and Paul Pogba, made inquiries but backed out after United set a £30 million price tag — a figure the French club considered excessive.

With no buyers willing to meet United’s demands, Onana remained part of the squad for 2025/26, though his place is far from guaranteed.

United turn to competition in goal

Manchester United spent much of the transfer window searching for a new first-choice goalkeeper. Their top target was Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez from Aston Villa, but negotiations collapsed before deadline day.

Instead, the club secured Senne Lammens for €21 million (R$133M). The Belgian keeper arrives to compete directly with Onana, raising the prospect of Amorim making a switch between the posts if performances don’t improve.

Future in doubt at Old Trafford

For now, Onana remains a Red Devil, but his request for a new deal — coupled with inconsistent form and strained relations with Amorim — leaves his future at the club uncertain. If results don’t turn, United may once again be forced into the goalkeeper market by January.
