Xabi Alonso identifies Modric’s replacements at Real Madrid
Florentino Pérez blocks new midfield signings as Spanish coach places faith in youth
Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has identified Arda Güler and Franco Mastantuono as his preferred long-term replacements for club legend Luka Modric, according to reports from Defensa Central. Despite requesting reinforcements in midfield, Alonso will have to work with internal solutions after club president Florentino Pérez ruled out further signings.
Alonso had reportedly prioritized the signing of Nicolò Barella from Inter Milan to succeed Modric in the center of the pitch. However, the Italian international’s market value estimated at over €55 million (more than R$300 million) was deemed too steep, and negotiations were never initiated.
Güler Impresses as Modric’s Heir
During the Club World Cup, Turkish starlet Arda Güler was tested in Modric’s role and left a strong impression on the coaching staff. While the club is now focused on enhancing Güler’s defensive contribution, Alonso views him as a natural successor to the Croatian maestro.
The plan is to gradually shape Güler into a complete midfielder capable of dictating tempo and transitioning between phases hallmarks of Modric’s legendary role at the Bernabéu.
Mastantuono to Be Trialed in New Role
In addition to Güler, Franco Mastantuono, the 16-year-old Argentine signed from River Plate, will also be trialed as a deeper-lying midfielder. While initially seen as a Jude Bellingham understudy, Mastantuono’s role is being reconsidered due to Bellingham’s recent shoulder surgery and Alonso’s tactical demands.
Mastantuono, however, will need time to adapt to European football. He’s expected to start the season on the bench, with Alonso planning to integrate him gradually through training sessions at Valdebebas.
Real Madrid Prepares for La Liga Opener
Real Madrid have just one friendly match scheduled before their La Liga opener against Osasuna. The pre-season fixture will be played away against WSG Tirol, as the team continues preparations under Alonso’s leadership.
With Barcelona entering the season as reigning Spanish champions, Los Blancos are determined to reclaim domestic supremacy. Xabi Alonso’s youth-driven midfield transition without a big-name signing marks a bold new era in the club’s tactical evolution.
