Hansi Flick’s Barcelona approaches agreement to sell Iñaki Peña to Como 1907

Barcelona are on the verge of completing the transfer of goalkeeper Iñaki Peña to Italian side Como 1907, in a move that would mark another departure from Hansi Flick’s squad. According to journalist José Álvarez Haya, negotiations are in the final stages, with only minor details left to resolve.

Como’s Ambitious Project Attracts Peña

Led by Cesc Fàbregas, Como 1907 see Peña as a long-term solution and part of their growth strategy in Italian football. The goalkeeper’s reduced status at Camp Nou and relatively low cost have accelerated talks, with both parties optimistic about a deal.

Peña, 25, is under contract with Barcelona until June 2026, but with his role diminished, he was keen on a change of scenery. Without a move this summer, he would have been eligible to sign a pre-contract in January and leave for free next year.

Fall in the Pecking Order

Peña briefly held the starting spot in 2024 when Marc-André ter Stegen was sidelined through injury. However, the signing of Wojciech Szczęsny last season altered his trajectory. The Polish veteran quickly won Hansi Flick’s trust, relegating Peña to the bench and leaving the Spaniard frustrated after believing he had reached the ideal moment to secure his place.

Goalkeeping Hierarchy for 2025/26

Barcelona’s goalkeeping department is undergoing major changes. With Ter Stegen still battling fitness issues, the club signed Joan García from Espanyol, who is expected to assume the starting role immediately. Szczęsny remains a reliable backup until Ter Stegen’s full return.

That leaves Peña surplus to requirements, making Como’s project the most attractive option for regular minutes. The Barcelona-born goalkeeper previously had a loan spell at Galatasaray in 2022, gaining experience abroad.

Barcelona Focus Shifts to Retentions

Following Peña’s imminent departure, Barcelona are working to prevent further exits. Last week, Iñigo Martínez left for Al-Nassr, weakening the defensive line. Meanwhile, the board is also prioritizing a renewal for Frenkie de Jong, whose contract runs until June 2026. The Dutchman has yet to commit to an extension, raising concerns of losing another key player for free.
