Barcelona prepares 2026 transfer of Julián Álvarez as Lewandowski’s successor
Barcelona have identified Julián Álvarez as their long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, with plans to pursue the Argentine striker in 2026.
Álvarez on Barcelona’s radar
According to Fichajes, Julián Álvarez is now a priority target for the Catalan club. The 24-year-old striker, currently shining at Atlético Madrid, is viewed as the ideal player to lead the attack once Lewandowski’s contract winds down.
Although Atlético are unwilling to let one of their star players join a direct domestic rival, Barcelona believe that Álvarez’s personal desire to move to Camp Nou could be decisive when negotiations open.
Impressive debut season at Atlético
Álvarez arrived in Spain last summer after two seasons with Manchester City. In his first campaign under Diego Simeone, he quickly became indispensable:

His 37 direct goal contributions showcased his value in La Liga, further elevating his reputation as one of the most complete forwards in Europe.
Lewandowski still the main man
For now, Lewandowski remains central to Hansi Flick’s plans. The Polish striker delivered another productive season in front of goal and will continue as Barcelona’s No. 9 until at least 2026, when his current deal runs out.
The transition plan is clear: Lewandowski to lead in the short term, Álvarez to potentially take over in the medium term.
Competition and timing
Barcelona aren’t the only ones watching Álvarez. Several top European clubs are also monitoring his progress, but the Blaugrana currently look best positioned should a deal become viable in two years’ time.
Meanwhile, Álvarez continues to deliver for Atlético. He scored a stunning free-kick in the season opener against Espanyol, although Simeone’s men fell 2-1.

While the long-term plan is to secure Álvarez, Barcelona’s immediate transfer priority lies in defense. President Joan Laporta has set his sights on Alessandro Bastoni, one of Inter Milan’s defensive pillars, as a potential dream signing in the current or upcoming windows.
