Spain made a statement in their Women’s Euro Cup debut, defeating Portugal 5–0 with a commanding performance on Friday. Goals from Vicky López, Alexia Putellas, Cristina Martín-Prieto, and two from Esther González sealed the win, confirming Spain’s status as one of the tournament favorites.

The Spanish team controlled both halves of the match, showing their quality and tactical superiority. With this result, Spain tops Group B on goal difference and needs just one more victory to secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Montse Tomé Highlights Teamwork and Intelligence

After the match, Spain coach Montse Tomé praised her players and the coaching staff for the preparation and execution of their game plan.

“The team did a great job. The players interpreted the plan very well, and we managed to score five goals, which is a great way to start a tournament like this,” Tomé said. “We invested a lot of time in analyzing our rivals, and the coaching staff has been preparing for this Euro for a long time. All the teams have the same limited time to prepare, so it is crucial to make the most of it.”

Tomé also praised the players’ intelligence and adaptability:

“We have to congratulate the players. You just have to give them two or three instructions and they execute them perfectly. With all their talent, they manage to shine. We know how we want to play — we are a team that likes to have the ball but there is always an opponent who will try to disrupt that, depending on their own style,” she added.

Upcoming Matches

Spain will continue their campaign on Monday (July 7) against Belgium at 1 p.m. (Brasília time). They will then face Italy in the final group-stage match on Friday (July 11) at 4 p.m. (Brasília time).
