Atlético Madrid target Renato Veiga, but Chelsea’s asking price is scary

Atlético Madrid has initiated negotiations with Chelsea for the transfer of Renato Veiga, but the English club’s €40 million asking price is proving to be a stumbling block, sources confirm.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, both the Spanish club and the 21-year-old Portuguese defender are open to a deal. However, Atlético’s leadership views the current fee as inflated and is pushing for a reduction.
Versatile Talent, But Not in Chelsea’s Plans
Renato Veiga joined Chelsea from Swiss side Basel in 2023 for €14 million, and impressed during a recent loan spell at Juventus, where he earned praise for his composure, height (1.91m), and tactical versatility. The defender can operate as a centre-back, left-back, or defensive midfielder, making him a valuable fit for Diego Simeone’s system.
Despite his promise, Veiga does not appear to feature in the plans of new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who omitted him from the squad that won the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Price vs. Market Value
While Veiga’s recent form including his call-up to the Portuguese national team and participation in the Nations League final victory over Spain has increased his profile, Atlético believes the price demanded by Chelsea exceeds his current market valuation.
Negotiations are ongoing, and Atlético is reportedly relying on the player’s lack of playing time in London and interest in the move to help leverage a more favorable deal.
Atlético’s Defensive Reshuffle
The Colchoneros are actively reshaping their squad this summer. The club already boasts defenders José María Giménez, Robin Le Normand, and Clément Lenglet, but views Veiga as a high-upside addition who aligns with its long-term vision.
So far this window, Atlético has secured the signings of Thiago Almada, Álex Baena, Johnny Cardoso, and Matías Ruggeri, while veterans César Azpilicueta, Ángel Correa, and Axel Witsel have departed.
