Between Fran García and Ferland Mendy, Real Madrid decides which Frenchman should leave the club

Recurring injuries and squad depth influence decision ahead of 2025/26 season
Real Madrid have reportedly decided to part ways with Ferland Mendy this summer, while retaining fellow left-back Fran García for the upcoming campaign. The decision follows the club’s recent signing of Álvaro Carreras for €50 million, which has intensified competition for the left-back position.
Mendy Deemed Surplus Despite Contract Renewal
According to Spanish outlet AS, the board has chosen to retain 24-year-old García and move on from Mendy, who has struggled with consistent injury issues. Despite his injury record, Mendy was once a key figure under former manager Carlo Ancelotti, but his standing has declined in recent months.
The 30-year-old French international recently renewed his contract with Los Blancos until June 2028, but his fitness concerns and age have complicated his long-term prospects at the club.
New Signing Forces Restructuring
The arrival of Álvaro Carreras, signed for a hefty €50 million, has created an overload at left-back. Neither Mendy nor García have expressed a desire to leave, but the club sees Mendy as the more logical departure, particularly as García featured heavily during the Club World Cup, starting every match under Xabi Alonso, who is expected to give the Spaniard more opportunities going forward.
Market Challenges Ahead
Although the club is open to Mendy’s departure, finding buyers could be difficult, as noted by AS, due to his recent injury history and high salary. Real Madrid are reportedly willing to listen to offers but are not expecting a significant transfer fee.
In the 2024/25 season, Mendy made 31 appearances, starting in 28 of them. He provided 2 assists and logged 2,248 minutes in total.
