Manchester United signs Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, but high investment prevents the arrival of Alexander Isak

Red Devils invest over €149 million, ending pursuit of Newcastle’s Swedish striker

Manchester United have made two major signings in the summer transfer window, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. However, the high investment has financially ruled out a move for Alexander Isak, Newcastle’s standout centre-forward.

Investment Ends Isak Pursuit

According to journalist Chris Wheeler, United has abandoned negotiations for Isak and other high-cost players such as Benjamin Šeško. The club’s focus shifted after finalising deals with former Brentford star Mbeumo and Wolves striker Cunha.

While Isak was one of manager Rúben Amorim’s preferred targets, the financial implications of United’s early signings made the deal unfeasible. This could open the door for Liverpool, who remain keen on the Swedish striker.

Transfer Window Seen as Positive

Despite missing out on Isak, Manchester United’s transfer activity is being viewed positively by fans and analysts. Bryan Mbeumo arrives as a dynamic right winger with proven Premier League impact, while Matheus Cunha brings versatility capable of playing as a traditional number 9 or operating in a deeper playmaking role.

These additions provide Amorim with new tactical options as he prepares for his first full season in charge at Old Trafford.

€149 Million Investment

Manchester United paid €74.2 million for Brazilian international Matheus Cunha, who previously played for Atlético Madrid before a strong campaign at Wolverhampton.

Meanwhile, Bryan Mbeumo became the marquee signing of the window. The club finalised his transfer for €75 million, after months of negotiations. The total combined investment exceeds €149 million, forcing the club to tighten its remaining transfer budget.

Amorim to Work With Existing Squad

With no room left for another marquee signing, manager Rúben Amorim is expected to focus on the squad already in place. For the first time since taking over, he will have a full pre-season to implement his strategies.

The expectation at Old Trafford remains high, as United aim to improve their position in both the Premier League and European competitions in the 2025/26 campaign.
