Manchester City must decide between Gündogan and Nico González as fans back veteran’s exit

Squad reshuffle looms as the club plans for the 2025/26 season

Manchester City is facing a pivotal decision regarding the futures of Ilkay Gündogan and Nico González, with only one expected to remain at the Etihad for the upcoming season. As the club’s board evaluates the squad, fan sentiment is clearly leaning toward parting ways with the veteran German midfielder.

Fans Push for Gündogan’s Exit

According to Tyrone Marshall of the Manchester Evening News, either Gündogan, 34, or Nico González, 23, will be released this summer. Reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly in favour of keeping the younger Spaniard.

“If it’s not Gundogan I’ll be furious,” wrote one supporter on X. Others chimed in with: “Let Gundo go. Letting Nico go would be a BIG mistake,” and “Tired of Gundogan. He’s not a legend anymore.”

Gündogan’s Performance in Decline

The veteran midfielder made 54 appearances last season, starting 38 matches, with 5 goals and 6 assists. While respectable, the numbers show a dip compared to his peak years at City.

Gündogan had initially departed for Barcelona in 2023/24, where he logged 51 matches, 5 goals, and an impressive 14 assists. However, he returned to Manchester for the 2024/25 campaign, only to face growing criticism from supporters.

Investment in Nico González May Tip Decision

Meanwhile, Nico González arrived in February 2025 and has had limited chances to prove himself scoring 2 goals in 17 appearances. Still, his age and potential have made him a favourite among fans and analysts.

City paid €65.9 million for his transfer, a considerable investment that may influence the board’s final call. Supporters argue that González deserves more time and continuity in the squad.

Grealish Also Expected to Leave

As the club continues planning for next season, Jack Grealish has also been named as a likely departure. The squad overhaul reflects City’s ambition to refresh its lineup while maintaining competitive depth for both domestic and European campaigns.

A final decision on Gündogan vs. González is expected before the transfer window closes.
