Xabi Alonso explains why Vinícius Júnior started on the bench in Real Madrid’s win over Oviedo

Real Madrid defeated Real Oviedo 3–0 in LaLiga’s second round, but the big talking point was Xabi Alonso’s decision to leave Vinícius Júnior out of the starting XI in favor of Rodrygo.
Coach Justifies Bold Lineup Call
After the match, Alonso addressed the surprising tactical choice.
“I make all my decisions based on what’s best for the team. For today’s match, this was the best decision,” the coach told Madrid Zone.
The Spanish manager emphasized that his decision was purely strategic, reflecting what he believed would work best against Oviedo’s defensive setup.
Vinícius Júnior Responds Off the Bench
Despite starting on the bench, Vinícius made an immediate impact after being subbed on in the 63rd minute for Rodrygo. In just two attacking sequences, the Brazilian assisted Kylian Mbappé to make it 2–0 and then scored Madrid’s third, breaking Gareth Bale’s club record for fastest goal contribution off the bench.
Vinícius had struggled to find form under Alonso, with a quiet debut against Osasuna, but his performance against Oviedo was a strong response to critics and a reminder of his value.
Rodrygo’s Frustration Adds Transfer Fuel
Rodrygo, who started the match ahead of Vini, failed to shine. He registered two shots and several unsuccessful dribbles and crosses before being substituted. Cameras later captured him visibly frustrated on the bench alongside Éder Militão.
The underwhelming display could further fuel speculation about Rodrygo’s future, as rumors persist about his potential departure from the Santiago Bernabéu.
Madrid’s Strong Start Continues
With the 3–0 victory, Real Madrid remain unbeaten in LaLiga under Xabi Alonso. The competition for attacking spots is heating up, with Vinícius, Rodrygo, and Mbappé all fighting for starting roles ahead of key fixtures.
