Real Madrid are considering Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund as Kylian Mbappé’s replacement

With the arrival of Kylian Mbappé at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid is now turning its attention to reinforcing the depth of its attacking lineup. According to Sky Sports, the Spanish giants have set their sights on Rasmus Højlund, the young Danish striker currently at Manchester United.
Loan Deal Under Consideration
Head coach Xabi Alonso has reportedly requested the signing of a tall, physically strong center forward to serve as a rotation option and backup for Mbappé. Standing at 1.91m, Højlund fits the bill. The initial plan is to pursue a season-long loan deal, although no formal offer has been submitted at this stage only interest has been confirmed.
Højlund’s Underwhelming Season at Manchester United
Despite arriving at Old Trafford with high expectations, Højlund struggled during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, scoring only four goals in 32 league appearances. However, his youth he’s just 22 years old and physical attributes keep him on the radar of top European clubs.
Why Real Madrid Still Believes in Højlund
In Spain, Højlund is seen as a long-term project. Real Madrid believes a loan stint could allow the striker to develop in a new environment with less pressure while also giving the club an opportunity to assess whether a permanent deal makes sense in 2026.
For Manchester United, loaning Højlund to Real Madrid could:
- Help the player regain form and confidence
- Create an opportunity to recoup part of their investment
- Make space for new arrivals as the club reshapes its attacking line
Other Names on Madrid’s List: Roberto Firmino & Budimir
Besides Højlund, Real Madrid is also exploring other striker options, including:
- Roberto Firmino, currently with Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia), whose contract expires in 2026
- Ante Budimir, from Osasuna, as a short-term, low-cost alternative
This increased activity in the striker market is a clear indication that Xabi Alonso has doubts about Endrick’s immediate readiness. The 18-year-old Brazilian may even be loaned out after the Club World Cup to gain regular playing time.
