This will be the 9th time that the teams will face each other in a knockout round . So far, Palmeiras has the advantage, having qualified five times and been eliminated only three. However, Botafogo arrives at the World Cup in better shape.
Despite finishing second in Group B, Glorioso shocked the world by defeating PSG , who had just won the Champions League . Even with the defeat to Atlético de Madrid , Renato Paiva’s team advanced to the next round in second place, with six points.
Palmeiras topped Group A. They finished undefeated, but with just one win, against Al Ahly . In the other games, they stumbled against Porto , when they dominated their opponent, and also against Inter Miami , a match in which they came closer to losing than winning.
Whoever qualifies this Saturday will face the winner of the match between Benfica and Chelsea , who also play on Saturday, but at 5pm (Brasília time), in the city of Charlotte. Also at stake is the US$ 13.1 million (R$ 72.5 million) prize paid by FIFA to whoever reaches the quarterfinals.
