World Cup goes to the round of 16 with 9 champions, 6 Europeans from the ranking and one “intruder”

The round of 16 of the Club World Cup is dominated by continental champions, with only UEFA teams among the ranked teams still alive and one guest representing the host country.

Of the 16 teams still in the running, nine traveled to the United States after winning their confederation cup in the last four years. Winning the continental title during that period was the only direct way to qualify for the first World Cup, without relying on the ranking used by FIFA or any other means.

PSG are not included in the count as they won the last Champions League, which guaranteed a place in the next Club World Cup.

All the champions of South America and Europe advanced to the knockout stages. The four Brazilian teams (Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Palmeiras) that won the Libertadores and the three Champions League winners (Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid), since the Spanish giant won two editions, secured their place in the knockout stages.

The round of 16 will still have two “outsiders” and one “intruder”. Al Hilal and Monterrey are the continental champions outside the Conmebol-UEFA axis, while Inter Miami, who were invited after the symbolic title of the Supporters’ Shield for having “won” the regular season of the MLS.

Six continental champions have already fallen by the wayside. They were: Asian teams Urawa Red Diamonds and Al Ain; African teams Al Ahly and Wydad Casablanca; and North American teams Pachuca and Seattle Sounders. The other ten eliminated teams were teams that qualified for the tournament via rankings.

Only Brazil, England, Italy and Germany qualified all their representatives for the knockout stage. These four countries were the only ones with more than two teams in the World Cup that still have teams in the round of 16.
