Villarreal ends Laliga season with victory over Sevilla
Villarreal thrashes Sevilla in a duel that feels like a farewell.
The difference seen on the pitch at La Cerámica is exactly the same as the one between the two teams. All the decisions Villarreal made well and Sevilla made poorly can be extrapolated to the back office . And of course, that’s why one of the two will be playing in the Champions League next season, and the other can be thankful for playing in the First Division for another year.
It took Yeremy less than four minutes to reveal the chasm that separates the two teams. Kike Salas gave away the ball with a poor clearance, and the Canary Islander thanked him by putting it in the top corner. Gueye was piqued , and in the 8th minute, he unleashed an unstoppable shot that would have set off a radar gun .
Marcelino ‘s men saw it so easy that they were even embarrassed. And they eased up. Sevilla wanted to push forward, and Suso’s individual talent flourished, sending a great cross into the box for Sow to head into the back of the net . Villarreal came alive, Aguomé saved a Gueye shot… and then Baena appeared.
Great goal… and goodbye?
Villarreal fans went to La Cerámica to thank the team for their season’s work and to see Baena in yellow, just in case it was the last time. And the midfielder gave them one last memory in the form of a stunning goal. He burst into the box, pinned Kike Salas to the ground with a shot at the far post, and when he had him petrified, he cut inside and then finished at the near post. If it was the last, it couldn’t have been a better ‘The End’.
The second half served as a farewell and little else. Lukebakio started and in five minutes hit the side netting and the crossbar. Near the end, the 4-3 scoreline was ruled out, demonstrating that he is the
Sevilla team’s greatest asset.
Gueye scored Villarreal’s fourth with a shot at the near post and Ramón Martínez , in the 80th minute, nailed a left-footed shot that hit the post and that, despite the season and the defeat, will always be remembered.
