Arsenal draws with Crystal Palace at the end and leaves Liverpool one step away from the English title

Summary

Arsenal all but ended their Premier League title hopes after stumbling to a 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday after a late blunder in the opening stages. Kiwior and Trossard scored for the hosts, while Eze and Mateta secured a point for the visitors. Arsenal can now watch Liverpool clinch the title with a draw at Tottenham on Sunday.

MATHEMATICS

The possibility of Arsenal overtaking Liverpool in the title race is now basically mathematical. With a draw, the London team is now on 67 points, 12 less than its rival. As it only has four more games to play in this Premier League, Arsenal would reach a maximum of 79 – Liverpool’s current score. In other words: Arne Slot’s team only needs to draw with Tottenham on Sunday to secure the national title. Even if Liverpool loses its remaining five games, and Arsenal wins its four matches, the tiebreaker would come down to goal difference – a criterion in which Salah and co. have a 10-goal advantage.

SERIOUS FAILURE

Arsenal took the lead after just two minutes through Kiwior, but were denied a first-half equaliser when Eze equalised. Trossard put the Londoners back in front and Arsenal continued to build on their lead. However, a poor clearance nine minutes from time handed Palace the equaliser on a silver platter: Saliba’s poor clearance allowed Mateta to beat Odegaard to slot into an empty net, while Raya was out of the area to help with the passing.
