Argentina to play two friendlies in October after dominant World Cup qualifying campaign

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina, reigning World Cup and Copa América champions, return to action in October with two friendlies in the United States.
Argentina Finish Qualifiers on Top
Argentina showed once again why they are considered one of the world’s strongest teams. The Albiceleste finished the South American World Cup Qualifiers in first place, nine points clear of second. In 18 matches, they registered 12 wins, two draws, and four losses—a campaign that cemented their status as tournament favorites heading into 2026.
October Friendlies in the United States
With qualification complete, Argentina now turn to warm-up matches ahead of next year’s World Cup. Their next fixtures will be in the U.S. against two lower-ranked sides:
- October 10 – Argentina vs. Venezuela (9 p.m. Brasília time)
- October 13 – Argentina vs. Puerto Rico
Venezuela narrowly missed a playoff spot after losing to Colombia in the final qualifying round, while Puerto Rico failed to advance past the CONCACAF group stage.
Will Messi Play?
The big question is whether Lionel Messi will feature. The Inter Miami forward skipped Argentina’s last qualifier against Ecuador, citing physical issues and the need to manage his playing load.
While Scaloni may leave him out to test alternatives, Messi’s presence can’t be ruled out—especially since both games will be played in the United States, his current home. However, his inclusion would come as a surprise given his recent comments about pacing himself ahead of 2026.
