UEFA confirmed on Friday (29) that four bids are officially in the race to host the 2029 Women’s Euro Cup: Portugal, Germany, Poland, and a joint project between Denmark and Sweden. The decision on the host nation will be made on December 3 during UEFA’s executive committee meeting.

Portugal emerges as frontrunner

Among the candidates, Portugal appears as one of the favorites thanks to its recent track record of hosting major events. The country successfully staged the 2024/25 Women’s Champions League final and is already confirmed as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco.

This experience could strengthen its position against traditional powers such as Germany, Poland, and the Nordic joint bid.

Selection process

UEFA will select the host nation through a voting system among 20 committee members. If more than two countries remain after the first round, successive rounds will eliminate the lowest-ranked candidates until one proposal secures a majority.

The announcement of the winning bid is expected in December, giving the chosen country almost four years to prepare.

Tournament format remains unchanged

The Women’s Euro Cup will continue with 16 national teams, divided into four groups of four. The top two in each group advance to the quarterfinals, followed by semifinals and the grand final. The champion also earns the right to play in the Finalíssima, against the winner of the Copa América Femenina.

England, the current champion

The last edition in 2025, hosted in Switzerland, saw England crowned champions. After finishing second in Group D, the Lionesses defeated Sweden in the quarterfinals, Italy in the semifinals, and overcame Spain in the final after a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw in regular time.

With the trophy, England secured its second European title and a spot in the upcoming Finalíssima against Brazil, winner of the South American competition.
