Ceballos could leave Real Madrid and sign with Marseille to play in the World Cup

Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is set to leave the Spanish giants, with Olympique de Marseille emerging as the frontrunner for his signature. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 28-year-old has already approved the French club’s project and views the move as the best way to secure regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Marseille project convinces Ceballos

Ceballos has struggled to find space under new coach Xabi Alonso, featuring for just four minutes across Madrid’s opening two La Liga matches this season. Believing his opportunities in Spain are limited, the midfielder is keen on a fresh start in Ligue 1, where Marseille has promised him a central role in their project.

The Spaniard, who wears the No. 19 shirt, is determined to regain form and visibility to boost his chances of being selected by Luis de la Fuente for Spain’s World Cup squad.

Disciplinary issues accelerate exit

Tensions between Ceballos and the coaching staff grew earlier this month when the midfielder arrived late to training, resulting in a fine from Alonso. The disciplinary measure underlined the coach’s stance on discipline and signaled that Ceballos was not central to Madrid’s long-term plans.

Real Betis also in the race

While Real Betis the club where Ceballos began his professional career is also monitoring the situation, their lack of urgency has left Marseille in pole position. Betis have yet to present a concrete offer, whereas Marseille has already held talks with Madrid and the player.

Despite his preference for a French move, Ceballos has not ruled out a return to Betis if negotiations accelerate.

Exit seen as imminent

Behind the scenes, Real Madrid considers his departure likely, especially with limited minutes available in a crowded midfield. Unless Betis steps up quickly, Ceballos is expected to continue his career in France, where Marseille hopes his creativity and experience will be key in their domestic and European campaigns.
