Bayer Leverkusen announces Lucas Vázquez, ex-Real Madrid, as reinforcement until 2027

Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of Spanish right-back Lucas Vázquez, who joins the German champions on a free transfer after leaving Real Madrid. The 34-year-old signed a contract until 2027 and is set to play a key role in the club’s restructuring following the departure of several stars.
Experienced reinforcement for Leverkusen
Vázquez underwent medical tests in Madrid before completing the move and is expected to be available for Leverkusen’s Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen this weekend. The Spaniard arrives as a direct replacement for Jeremie Frimpong, who was sold to Liverpool earlier in the summer.
During his decade at Real Madrid, Vázquez lifted five Champions League titles and became known for his consistency and versatility. His arrival provides immediate experience and leadership to a squad that has lost important names such as Granit Xhaka, Florian Wirtz, and Jonathan Tah.
Vázquez excited for new chapter
“I’m looking forward to continuing my career at Bayer Leverkusen, a club I’ve heard a lot about from coach Xabi Alonso and my long-time teammate Dani Carvajal,” Vázquez said during his presentation.
Club sees him as a pillar
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes praised the move, calling the veteran defender a crucial addition:
“With Lucas Vázquez, we’ve signed a player with immense experience who has won everything possible at Real Madrid. He will be a pillar of the team.”
Champions look to remain competitive
Despite being crowned Bundesliga champions in 2024, Leverkusen are facing a period of transition after losing several core players. The signing of Vázquez is part of a strategy to blend experienced veterans with young talent, ensuring the club remains competitive in both Germany and Europe.
Vázquez is expected to bring defensive stability, leadership, and a winning mentality to a squad aiming to defend its title and make a deeper run in continental competitions.
