Mainoo loses his place and becomes Bruno Fernandes’ backup at Manchester United

Kobbie Mainoo’s development at Manchester United could face a setback under Ruben Amorim’s system. Despite being one of the club’s brightest academy graduates, the 19-year-old midfielder is now viewed primarily as a backup option to captain Bruno Fernandes, according to The Athletic.

Amorim’s Tactical Scheme Limits Midfield Options

United’s manager has implemented a 3-4-2-1 formation, which significantly reduces the available midfield spots. With Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte battling for one position in the double pivot, Mainoo has been pushed to serve as Fernandes’ understudy in the advanced role.

Fernandes himself has been deployed deeper than in previous seasons, dictating play from midfield rather than as part of the attacking trio. United’s new-look forward line Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko leaves no room for the Portuguese international further upfield, solidifying Mainoo’s role on the bench.

United Still Active in the Transfer Market

While Mainoo adjusts to his reduced role, Manchester United continue to work on bolstering their midfield. Initial interest in Carlos Baleba (Brighton) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) has cooled, with Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart) now emerging as the most realistic target.

At just 24, Stiller is seen as a balanced midfielder capable of both defending and contributing in attack a profile Amorim values for his tactical setup.

Goalkeeper Situation Adds to Squad Uncertainty

Beyond midfield, United are also facing instability in goal. André Onana and Altay Bayindir have shown inconsistency, leading the club to pursue 22-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp as a long-term solution.
