Manchester United backtrack and move closer to signing Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens

Manchester United have reopened their search for a goalkeeper and are now in advanced talks to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, according to The Athletic. The 23-year-old Belgian international, also on Manchester City’s radar, is valued at around €9 million.
United Reverse Initial Transfer Stance
The Red Devils had previously indicated they would not enter the market for a goalkeeper this summer. However, with André Onana and Altay Bayindir struggling for consistency, the club has reassessed its position. Onana’s likely participation in the Africa Cup of Nations in December has further increased the urgency to secure a reliable backup option.
Rising Prospect in Europe
Lammens enjoyed a breakout season in 2023/24, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young keepers. Statman Dave reported that he ranked first among U-23 goalkeepers in Europe for goals prevented, surpassing City’s James Trafford, with an impressive 14.5 saves above expected.
His performances have not only caught United’s eye but also that of their city rivals. The prospect of winning the race against Pep Guardiola’s side adds extra intrigue to the deal.
Current Goalkeeping Situation at Old Trafford
Manager Ruben Amorim confirmed that Onana, who recently recovered from a muscle problem, will return to the starting XI against Fulham on Sunday (24) at Craven Cottage. Bayindir, who started in the defeat to Arsenal, is expected to return to the bench after criticism of his display.
With United seeking long-term stability in goal, Lammens is seen as a low-cost but high-upside signing, potentially positioning himself as Onana’s successor in the coming years.
