Estêvão seeks to shine at Chelsea and break a record of Brazilians who have not succeeded
Chelsea’s latest Brazilian signing, Estêvão, is determined to succeed where many of his compatriots have struggled. At just 18, the former Palmeiras star arrived in London this July with the weight of expectation and a price tag that could rise to €61.5 million (R$358 million).
From Palmeiras to the Premier League
The attacking midfielder arrives as one of Brazil’s brightest prospects, having impressed at Palmeiras and earned early recognition with the Brazilian national team. Chelsea secured his signature for an initial €45 million (R$262 million), investing in his long-term future.
Estêvão has already offered glimpses of his talent. In preseason, he scored against Bayer Leverkusen, and in Chelsea’s Premier League opener, he made his official debut as a second-half substitute.
Chelsea’s Troubled History with Brazilian Signings
Despite frequently turning to Brazil for talent, Chelsea’s track record with Brazilian players is mixed. Over the years, the club has signed 22 Brazilians, but not all left a mark.
Early arrivals such as Belletti and Mineiro were solid but unspectacular. Alexandre Pato endured a forgettable loan spell, while Filipe Luís, though reliable, never matched his Atlético de Madrid form.
Several young promises also failed to develop in London. Lucas Piazón, Wallace Oliveira, Kenedy, and Nathan never lived up to expectations. More recently, Ângelo and Deivid Washington, both products of Santos’ academy, struggled to adapt and have already left the squad. Midfielder Andrey Santos, meanwhile, remains at the club but is yet to prove himself.
Successful Brazilians at Stamford Bridge
On the other hand, several Brazilians carved out a lasting legacy in blue. Defender Alex, midfielder Ramires, and attackers Oscar and Willian were instrumental in Chelsea’s success in the 2010s. More recently, David Luiz and Thiago Silva became fan favorites and lifted major trophies.
Breaking the Cycle
Estêvão now faces the challenge of breaking the so-called “Brazilian curse” at Stamford Bridge. With his technical ability, versatility, and early promise, the youngster represents Chelsea’s hope for a new success story.
