Liverpool announces Gareth Taylor, formerly of Manchester City, as its new manager

Liverpool have named Gareth Taylor as the new manager of their women’s team, marking his first coaching role away from Manchester City. The Welshman, who led City’s women’s side for six seasons, takes over with the mission of guiding the Reds into the Women’s Super League title race and securing a spot in the Women’s Champions League.
Proven track record at Manchester City
Taylor left Manchester City in March after more than eight years at the club, including his playing career and a highly successful coaching spell. During his tenure, he won the Women’s League Cup in 2022, finished runner-up in the 2022 FA Women’s Cup, and amassed over 160 wins in more than 120 matches. Despite strong results, his inability to consistently challenge for the league title ultimately led to his departure.
A fresh challenge at Anfield
At Liverpool, Taylor inherits a team aiming to break into the WSL’s elite. The club has promised reinforcements in the current transfer window to bolster its squad. Speaking after his appointment, Taylor expressed excitement about the challenge ahead:
“Everyone in football knows the history, size, and potential of this club. Our goal is to create a team that fans can be proud of one that plays good football and, hopefully, enjoys success along the way.”
Season opener against Everton
Liverpool will begin their Women’s Super League campaign at home against Everton on September 7 at 8:00 a.m. (Brasília time), followed by an away match against Leicester City on September 14 at 11:00 a.m.
