Two goals and a masterclass performance from the Barcelona star lead La Roja to a dominant victory

Spain has officially booked its place in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Women’s Euro Cup, following a commanding 6-2 win over Belgium in Group B action on Monday (7). At the heart of the Spanish triumph was Alexia Putellas, who delivered a brilliant performance with two goals and an assist, reaffirming her status as one of the world’s top players.

A Balanced First Half Ends in Spain’s Favor

The match kicked off at a high tempo at the Stade de Suisse, with both sides fighting for control in the early stages. Spain struck first in the 22nd minute when Vicky López delivered a pinpoint assist to Putellas, who coolly finished to give La Roja a 1-0 lead.

But Belgium responded immediately. Just two minutes later, Justine Vanhaevermaet found the equalizer, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to level the score at 1-1.

Despite Belgium’s early resilience, Spain regained control before halftime. A powerful header from Irene Paredes in the 41st minute restored the lead, sending Jorge Vilda’s team into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Spain Turns on the Style in the Second Half

Belgium came out with purpose after halftime and quickly found their second goal through Hannah Eurlings in the 50th minute, making it 2-2. However, the equalizer would only ignite Spain’s firepower.

Just two minutes later, tournament top scorer Esther González netted her fourth goal of the Euro Cup, putting Spain back in front. From that point forward, Spain dominated possession and chances, unleashing a flurry of goals that left Belgium with no room to recover.

  • Mariona Caldentey extended the lead to 4-2 in the 61st minute.
  • Claudia Pina added to the scoreline with a stunning strike in the 81st.
  • Finally, Putellas capped off the night with her second goal in the 86th minute, sealing a comprehensive 6-2 victory.

Quarterfinal Spot Secured

With two wins in two matches, Spain now sits top of Group B and has officially clinched a spot in the Euro 2025 quarterfinals. The team is seen as one of the favorites to go all the way, especially with Putellas and González in top form.
